How Lip Gloss Tubes are Made

We makeup lovers LOVE lip products! But have you ever wondered how the packagings are made? Let’s find out!

A lip gloss tube is put together with four or five parts. Every part of the packaging is made with a process called “injection molding”, which machines inject molten material into the molds, and robotic arms with suction cups pick them out to cool down. After trimming off the edges, they are then put together as a complete set of lip gloss tube, and art designs can be printed on the outside.

The tube itself is made of AS plastic (aka SAN). AS or SAN is the acronym of Styrene-acrylonitrile resin. According to Wikipedia, is a copolymer plastic consisting of styrene and acrylonitrile. It is optically transparent and brittle in mechanical behavior. Uses include food containers, water bottles, kitchenware, computer products, packaging material, battery cases and plastic optical fibers.

The cap and the shoulder/collar are made of ABS plastic. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is the type of plastic that provides favorable mechanical properties such as impact resistance, toughness, and rigidity when compared with other common polymers. ABS polymers are resistant to aqueous acids, alkalis, concentrated hydrochloric and phosphoric acids and animal, vegetable and mineral oils, but they are swollen by glacial acetic acid, carbon tetrachloride and aromatic hydrocarbons and are attacked by concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids. ABS's light weight and ability to be injection molded and extruded make it useful in manufacturing products such as drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipe systems. Musical instruments such as recorders, plastic oboes and clarinets, piano movements, and keyboard keycaps are commonly made out of ABS. Other uses include toys and medical supplies.

Some designs don’t have a collar/shoulder, but when it does, these two parts would be welded together with ultrasonic. According to Wikipedia, ultrasonic welding is an industrial process whereby high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations are locally applied to work pieces being held together under pressure to create a solid-state weld.

Moving downwards, the stick inside the tube is called a “brush-holder” or an applicator, which is made of PP plastic and connects the two parts of the cap and the actual applicator.

Inside every tube, there is a rubber-like stopper which helps control the amount of lip product, leaving the perfect amount on the applicator. The stopper is made of PE, Polyethylene or polythene. Principal uses are in packaging film, trash and grocery bags, agricultural mulch, wire and cable insulation, squeeze bottles, toys, and housewares.

Last but not least, the most important part of a lip gloss package, the tip of the applicator. The applicator comes in different shapes and textures like sponge and silicon, felt tip and brush tip, the most commonly used one is the flocked applicator. Apart from this, there are different shapes like doe foot, curved doe foot, flat doe foot and reservoir tip, each can be put to different usage. It’s such a great design that a reservoir tip can pull out more product in the middle and still have a clean edge to help create a clear lip line.
