The Environmental Protection of Packaging Still Have a Long Way To Go

As early as 1947, some developed countries realized the importance of protecting the environment and derived a series of international environmental protection conventions. For the cosmetics industry, streamlined, environmentally friendly, non-polluting packaging materials and packaging have gradually emerged in recent years. More and more cosmetic brands are trying to minimize excessive packaging, such as making containers as space-saving cubes as possible. Or use some reusable raw materials, or reduce energy consumption in product manufacturing. However, the current cosmetic packaging materials are still mainly plastic, and the environmental protection of packaging materials still has a long way to go.

Inherent attributes determine market development

Plastic packaging is favored

The cosmetic container market is divided into plastic, glass, and metal containers according to product materials. Among them, plastic containers account for the highest proportion, reaching 58.6%, occupying an absolute market share. Plastic materials are usually PET, PVC, PP, acrylic, etc.

Due to the differences in the inherent properties of different packaging materials, their applications in the market are also different. Take the glass material as an example. It is actually the earliest packaging material used in the cosmetics industry. It has the characteristics of good optical performance, corrosion resistance, easy cleaning and disinfection, and high compressive strength, but the glass itself is brittle and easy to break. Not suitable for transportation. Although the hardness of the metal packaging material is higher than that of glass, it is easy to corrode with the metal itself after containing the cosmetics with a water-containing matrix, and the surface of the metal packaging material needs to go through the procedures of coating, lithography, welding, tank bottom sealing, etc. It is very complicated, which greatly increases the cost, so the probability of glass and metal packaging materials is low.

Different from glass, metal and other packaging materials, plastic packaging is soft, tough, malleable, and low in price. This is an important reason why plastic packaging is widely used. At present, my country's plastic packaging is still showing a growth trend, and the market share of glass ranks second.

In the era when plastics are popular, it provides us with great convenience, but at the same time it also brings great hidden dangers to the natural environment: According to the data of the Ocean Administration, in the next less than 10 years, scientists It is predicted that there will be 250 million tons of plastic in the ocean. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Due to the stability of the plastic structure, it is not easy to be degraded, and it remains underground for a long time, which easily changes the pH of the soil and affects the growth of crops.

On the other hand, most cosmetic plastics have not been effectively recycled, and cosmetic plastic waste with a short life cycle is very common from manufacturing to disposal. If left unchecked, these packaging will bring about 1,000 years of degradation burden to the earth.
